In aviation training, most of us know that a simulator can be used for 2.5 hours of training time toward a private pilot certificate. In my 40 years of flight training, I have trained or certified over 6000 pilots (I was a pilot examiner for 30 years). I always felt that a simulator was best used for more “advanced” training.
Last year I started training in a very advanced simulator, primarily for instrument. The simulator is so capable and fascinating, that I have had a couple of private pilot students request to train and one student that had only an intro flight (with a disappointing experience). I basically started her “flight training” in the simulator. Here is what I learned; these new “advanced” simulators are extremely effective for teaching critically important “habit patterns and procedures”. Of course I know that they will have to fly the airplane, but it will be quicker (and easier) when they already know and have practiced the “proper way” to do it.
I have also been impressed with things that I did not think would be effective in a simulator such as; traffic pattern operations, ground reference maneuvers, even spin training, especially effective is VFR flight into worsening weather (and other emergencies). So it looks like these “new generation” simulators are excellent for private pilot training. Also, a lot of fun for a “high time” flight instructor like me.
